                You’re welcome!

  • Bling-Nye, the Daft Punk guy

Texas GOP… you dumb. You really. Really. Dumb.

    • Slartibartfatsdomino

We knew that already (although would it be rude of me to point out that there is actually zero sourcing in that linked article? Who in the Texas GOP actually said that Planned Parenhood was encouraging pregnancies so people would have more abortions? We have no idea because the article doesn’t tell us and provides no links that shed any more information on the matter. That’s some pretty weak sauce, the basic plausibility notwithstanding). The more important thing that we learned from that linked article is that the Early Middle Ages never happened!

      • Bling-Nye, the Daft Punk guy

You have a very good point. I am a bit embarrassed I took it at face value. Those sorts of stories are exactly what keep the political divisiveness going.

        • JohnnyBrillcream

Rep Ken Paxton(R), he doesn’t want Planned Parenthood material to be used in sex ed classes. No one in the GOP even made the statement about Planned Parenthood’s goal to “get girls pregnant”, it was the made by a group of citizens that support the bill. So few Texans speak their mind (albeit a tad off base) and the entire GOP of one State is blamed (A great State I may add as I am a Texan). We live in a very scary time my friends, civil discourse has left the building.

          • Bling-Nye, the Daft Punk guy

Thanks, your info prompted me to dig a bit, and you’re right, no one came out and said it, but it was inferred from what they did say.

It is unfortunate that reactionary knee-jerking and flaming is what passes for political discourse these days.

Vitriol is what seems to sell more though, so I think we can lay a fair amount of blame on corporate media and their handlers.

      • Bling-Nye, the Daft Punk guy

I got curious and decided to look a bit and found these.

        http://blogs.dallasobserver.com/unfairpark/2013/02/plano_republican_jeff_leach_ha.php

        http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/03/06/texas-sex-ed-planned-parenthood_n_2819318.html?utm_hp_ref=politics

It kind of explains where that story spun out of.

Even if I was mistaken in crediting a story with no sources and taking it on face value (I definitely should know better; definite lapse on my part), I believe I still stand by my previous statement, given the new information regarding the bill being introduced that seeks to prevent “abortion affiliates” from providing sex education. Because I do think that’s pretty dumb.

        • Slartibartfatsdomino

Yep, now that we have some actual information, I’d say that bill is pretty dumb. And the supporter of the bill that said that Planned Parenthood had “an inherent conflict of interest” is also dumb.

This copyright alert system is so stupid. Everybody that was smart enough to figure out torrenting has already moved to a VPN or some other form of proxy service. This policy is going to catch out one or two low information computer users and do nothing to help the culture industry’s failing business model. The music industry has begun to figure this out, and certain television producers, such as Comedy Central, which puts all of its most popular content online with ads, has as well. HBO, on the other hand, wants you to purchase a full cable package, plus premium HBO subscription rates, to watch, essentially, one show or wait until the DVDs come out in a year or so. The new media landscape, I hate to tell you fellas, means that you should make your product easily available at a reasonable price. Study after study has shown that most people would happily purchase your product if it were reasonably available. The old tiered model of distribution is defunct. If I were running Disney today, I would put Iron Man 3 online on the same day of theater release, and charge the same (or less!) as for a ticket to the movie theater. Dedicated pirates are going to have your content online very soon anyway, why don’t you think about tapping into the online market, instead of trying to punish it out of existence? Because, I guarantee you, it’s quixotic, expensive, and earns you consumer hostility to try the latter, as these past years have demonstrated. Louis CK put his comedy special online for 5 bucks a pop, no DRM protections whatsoever, and made a goddamn killing. Evolve, please.

    • JohnnyBrillcream

Warner Bros, MGM and such should start a subscription service. Yearly fee plus rental/ticket cost per movie to get movies day of release over the internet. I don’t go to movies because I hate going to the theater, I enjoy having a fermented beverage at movie time and theaters frown upon that. Movie theaters would suffer but the industry is changing., Heck, AppleTV, Roku are becoming the new norm right now, they will be the new “theaters”. If they don’t keep up they get left behind.

      • Bling-Nye, the Daft Punk guy

We have an independent theater here that serves beer/wine in the lobby and allows you to bring your adult beverages in to select movies.

        • JohnnyBrillcream

But are you allowed to sit there in your underwear? I. Think. Not.

          • Bling-Nye, the Daft Punk guy

…once the lights go out and you keep it on the DL, sure. I seriously doubt anyone would say anything…

But no, you can’t have the movie stopped for you while you get up to go to the bathroom or freshen your beverage. THAT sucks.

  • CalGore

Feel like ive been starin at that top pic for like 10 min now while zonin out to music…heh..

  • foog

The proportion of illiterate people in Mexico is NOT on the rise. 2nd paragraph of the linked piece states that literacy is increasing, but that the absolute number of illiterate people in Mexico has increased. Misleading article is misleading.
