That mission to mars article reminded me of one of my favorite movies, the low-budget sci-fi dark comedy, Dark Star, which hilariously captures what it might be like to be trapped on a remote space ship with a bunch of dudes that you don’t really like or understand. Written by John Carpenter and Dan O’Bannon (who penned Alien) and also co-starring O’Bannon as the most resentful and generally pathetic of the crew-members. You can watch the whole thing, in pieces, here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2eJbq0xRfM&list=PL069D90185FF48EEF

    • LRC_Lurono

Thank you for posting that! I’ve been meaning to watch Dark Star for a while. I’m not sure if you’re familiar with Rooster Teeth Productions or not, but they’re the group that makes Red vs. Blue (among other things) and Burnie Burns (founder of RT, writer for RvB, voice actor, etc.) cites Dark Star as one of his biggest influences for RvB.

Looks like a good chunk of my night was just planned for me…

  • Sigmund_Jung

What the hell? I opened some of the links and cannot find out where is this narration coming from. Seriously, who creates audio autoplay on webpages that cannot be found? Made me crazy.

    • Sigmund_Jung

Not from the links on the post. I need to reevaluate my browsing habits; urgently.

  • Missin’ Mississippi

The story of the girl receiving 100 lashes for ‘engaging’ in premarital sex is beyond barbaric.
I don’t care what the law is. I can’t imagine living in a culture where women (children) are treated in such a cruel inhumane way. The step father is the one who needs a few hundred lashes and then thrown in jail for life, and that’s being kind.

    • LRC_Lurono

Replace “women (children)” with people and you’re golden.

Otherwise, completely agree! Every time I read a story about draconian laws like this I’m reminded that we have a looonng ways to go as a species. It’s sometimes too easy to forget that large swaths of the world are still like this…

      • Missin’ Mississippi

        You are so right.

  • PhiloteSplitter

That hockey coach deserves every second. Damn, what a douche.

    • slab99_99

The kid sustained a broken wrist, so it was assault with bodily injury. Fifteen (nonconsecutive!) days is a slap on the wrist.

  • ilovellamas

Any lawsuit against Budweiser should be dismissed out of hand on account of: You are stupid enough to drink that shit.

    • CalGore

I very much dislike it. But tbh there are few beers i actually enjoy so that my view is probably skewed, even so budweiser is pretty low on my list. Whats strange to me is that it is some huge staple around here that everyone loves and its the only thing a lot of my buddies drink. And even stranger when i comment on it (jokingly, i could care less what other people enjoy) several of them are like “yeah i fuckin hated budweiser too at first” o.O

      • DanielCopeland

Budweiser is great if you’re the type of drinker who wants to get and stay drunk. You have something good, and once you’re buzzed enough to not care about the taste, Bud is a cheap, inoffensive way to stay boozed up.

If you like actually enjoying your alcohol, and know how to nurse a drink over the course of the evening, Bud is a terrible excuse for beer.

        • ilovellamas

Yeah, that’s a fair point. If I’m already drunk, I switch to cheaper, less tasty beers. I just rarely get drunk on beer when I’m in the US because beer is so damn expensive, so I go with hard liquor (mixed drinks and cocktails). And I’m not following up my Tom Collins’ and my Cuba Libres with any beer. :P

          • DanielCopeland

I’ve only really gotten drunk a handful of times, generally when I drink I it’s either good beers that I’m drinking over an hour or so, a few shots and nothing else, or some sort of mixed drinks consumed the same way as the beer. Since I don’t usually aim for drunk, I pretty much never drink Bud, Coors, or the similarly cheap, mediocre beers. I’d rather pay more for a good beer/liquor and take my time enjoying it and end the evening with the remnants of a buzz than get shitfaced and wake up hungover.

On a related note, I had a bartender actually give me a blank stare in response to a request for a Cuba Libre. Had to explain that it’s a rum and coke with a bit of lime. The drink was decent, but my confidence in the bartender was weakened somewhat.

            • ilovellamas

Yeah ordering a Cuba Libre in the US can often be like ordering a Screwdriver in Europe, haha. But I guess rum and coke is different from a Cuba Libre, while vodka and orange is the same as a Screwdriver, so whatevs.

              • DanielCopeland

Yeah, the lime is the difference. I just figured it was a pretty well known drink.

I did entertain the notion of asking for a Blowjob just to see what reaction I got, but had no one to do shots with at the time, and it’s just not the same drinking the fun drinks alone.

                • ilovellamas

Not just the lime, but also type of rum. Rum and cokes are often made with spiced/brown rum, but Cuba Libre is always made with white rum – and never bottom-shelf.

                  • DanielCopeland

True, I forgot that spiced was the more common choice here.

                    • ilovellamas

To be honest, I like both equally, and since I’m not a fan of lime, I usually ask for lemon. So I switch between rum/Cokes and Cuba Libres all the time, because they’re both good, depending on my mood :)

my guess is that some employee at Bud told some redneck Bud drinker that they add water to their beer in some stage of brewing. Redneck Bud drinker then drunkenly thinks that he should be getting Bud with a higher alcohol content instead of it being “watered down” and demands, DEMANDS!, that they pay him money back.

nevermind the fact that you need water in there anyway….

  • SumAnon

Watered down beer probably just the taste in Bud shifting, as InBev futzes with the beer companies they acquire. Re: http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2012-10-25/the-plot-to-destroy-americas-beer#p2

“tripping a 13-year-old player in the handshake line after a game in June 2012 bounced all over the Internet. The kid broke his wrist and fell into a younger player.”

I don’t know where you got A youth hockey coach is sentenced to jail for tripping a 13 year old girl.

  • TheRogerPodacter

the whole racism laws in mississippi thing kinda makes me sad…

to me, saying “we’re not racist! look at how we have changed!” is like pointing out how many black people you know as the reason you are not racist towards black people…

rather than do away with the law entirely, why couldn’t they have just said “if you can go X number of years without getting one of your laws blocked by these challenges, we will then assume you no longer have a problem with these things”.

the fact that they had “240 discriminatory voting measures recently blocked by Section 5 and Section 2 challenges” is kind of terrifying, though it doesn’t say how much time these occurred over.

  • TheRogerPodacter

i think everyone is overlooking the bigger part of the ticketmaster ticket price ‘scams’ that take place for major sporting events.
when tickets go on sale for my sports team, everyone everywhere is buying them direct from the team and they sell out within minutes – every seat for every home game in the season.
and then… you go on ticketmaster or similar places and see that they have dozens of tickets now available…. at a MUCH higher price. and thats BEFORE the fees kick in!
