“Apparently, it was the huge amount of traffic, along with the know-how to carry out these types of attacks, that convinced U.S. government officials that attacks were coming from Iran. These officials, however, have not provided any technical evidence to back up their claims.”

Or any evidence of any kind whatsoever. Color me skeptical.

The know-how….. Because a hacker group wouldn’t know how to DDoS?

      Something smells like bullshit.

    • LlamaHomefry

Yeah, I don’t like where this is going…

In regards to Christopher Tolkien – Anyone I’ve spoken to that read the books has said the LotR films were done incredibly well. I also love the fact he says Peter Jackson eviscerated it, like he has destroyed every copy of the books and is using a small time film to pretend that’s the way the book went exactly. It’s a huge scale franchise based off of books that are still openly available to anyone that wishes to read them.

Seems more like he’s pissy that he spent what looks to be the entirety of his life rifling through his father’s work yet someone else gets more credit because he made a set of films.

    • Ingeld

If anybody has a right to be a purist for Tolkien’s world, it is Christopher Tolkien. Christopher is devoted to his father’s tales on a deeply personal level. I respect that even if I disagree with his view of Jackson’s interpretation.

      • TheOtherJK

I forget who said it, and I’m paraphrasing, but there was an author whose novel was adapted less than faithfully into a movie. When he was asked about whether or not the movie changed the book any, he said “nope, still up there on the shelf, right where I left it”.

Movies are collaborative efforts with millions at stake. Some compromise is to be expected when compared to the efforts of a man alone with his typewriter(probably pen and ink in this case). So, CT is correct, but his complaint is kind of like ‘water is wet’. That said, I’m still annoyed there was no scouring of the shire. hmmmph.

I’m not holding my breath for a Terrence Malick adaptation of the Silmarillion.

        • SumAnon

Tons, and I mean TONS of great movies are ‘derived’ from but do not follow their original source material. Jaws is a classic example of how much can be changed to make a mediocre book into an amazing film. And Peter Benchley was a part of production!

As someone who was NOT a fan of the LotR books (the Hobbit was OK), I thought the movies were a vast improvement.

      • Cathy Malmat

I have to disagree with you on CT being a true purist of his father’s work. All the stuff that was published in his father’s name posthumously includes multiple versions of many of the tales, indicating that he really had no idea which direction JRR intended for those stories to go, or even that JRR had decided on a direction. I’m certain CT tried to deliver the best interpretation of his father’s work that he could, but the fact of the matter is that it was all unpublished material that he compiled himself, and therefore he was just injecting works into the Middle Earth canon without ever really knowing his father’s intent for each piece of the whole within the story.

Anyone who wants to call his or her self a purist in this situation should dismiss the posthumous compilations and reject them from the canon because they were not entirely composed by the creator. Luckily, I’m not a purist and I found Unfinished Tales and some of the appendices to an enjoyable and interesting glimpse into the world of Middle Earth. CT just needs to remove the stick and realize he has probably altered the canon as much from his father’s original vision as PJ has. He should also be grateful for what PJ has done to bring attention back to his father’s works — and let’s be honest here, for the tons and tons of extra money the success of the LotR and Hobbit moves have brought to the Tolkien family.

As a fan who first read the books just before the movies came out because of the buzz surrounding FotR, I’m grateful to everyone who was involved in the production of the LotR movies for their role in bringing the series to my attention.

        • Ingeld

Well, there’s the rub isn’t it? Christopher Tolkien sees himself as a collaborator on his father’s work, not an interpreter as a film maker might. In many ways this role of his was given to him by his father who had him read drafts of the Hobbit and TLOTR while his father wrote him. After his father died, I am sure he believes he is continuing the work his father asked of him. His link to the texts are personal and his understanding of his father’s world probably goes beyond most people. If he dislikes Jackson’s interpretation then I respect him for it, even if I disagree. As I said, he has earned the right to be a purist.

Lol @ the NRA not understanding why most people don’t take their offer to pay twice what the police are offering for their unwanted guns. They clearly don’t get that people aren’t doing this for the money, they are doing it to feel like they have done the right thing with a potentially dangerous item they no longer want to be responsible for.
