I can assure you that this is confusing even for Americans of Dutch descent, who because their last name ends in “horst” and because of the whole Pennsylvania Dutch thing, actually thought their family was German when said person was a kid. And just figured out that Holland/Netherlands thing as an adult. Wait, is that just me?

  • rolthewolf

    Love the Dutch!

      Thank you.
We’ll be here all lifetime dont forget the buffet.

So…. does this mean New Zealand was colonised by people from The Netherlands?

Also what does it say of Australia, I thought we took that first yet for a bit they owned it?

MY MIND IS FULL OF FUCK.

      GREENLAND AND ICELAND

      • TruuuV

BUT GREENLAND IS SNOWEY AND ICELAND IS GREEN.

        AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHH?!?!

Said every Dutch guy, five hundred years ago.

    • Captain History

The first known landing in Australia by Europeans was by Dutch navigator Willem Janszoon in 1606. It was formally claimed by the Dutch as “Nieuw Holland” in 1644, but around that time a host of other nations also laid claim, including the British, the Germans, the French and the Swedes. None of them actually tried to establish a colony or settlement until the Dutch did so in what is now New South Wales in 1788, the same year that the British established a penal colony at Botany Bay. The Dutch settlement failed, after which the Dutch abandoned their claim to New Holland. However, as the Dutch were the first to establish a claim and a name for the island continent, the name stuck. In 1824 the British officially changed the name to Australia. The last known use of the name “New Holland” by officials of the British government was in 1837. The Dutch continued to refer to Australia as “Nieuw Holland” until around the end of the 19th century.

Heaps of Dutch here, bit way more British.

So you get Apple tarts and English breakfasts?

Your stomach must have loved moving more than you did.

        • Logan

Have yet to see an apple tart! All the bakeries here carry pastries with meat in them. :-X

          • TruuuV

Aww that’s not okay, bloody pastry teases.

            • Logan

I know!! Nevermind how difficult it is to find a proper donut…

              • TruuuV

Aww, this is killing the percieved magic of New Zealand for me.

                • Logan

No, don’t let it! Because…the food here is incredible. Almost all meat is free farmed, and fish is local. Often the restaurant will tell you which part of the country the meat is from and what the animal ate (ie grass fed). And instead of donuts, there are scones and muffins that are very tasty. The dairy is better too. And the water. And the air! So fresh!

                  • TruuuV

Scones I guess I can deal with and the whole *entire country with half the population of London* thing is still making me go “IWANTIT, I WANT IT NOW”

                    • Logan

Just wait until you visit! Extremely difficult to come here and not fall in love with this place.

                    • TruuuV

Are there a lot of forests/country parks around? Tends to be a selling point for me.

                    • Logan

In Wellimgton, we have the “town belt”, which is a protected forest/land that surrounds the city. Heaps of walking trails, both formal and informal. It can be seen from almost anywhere in the city.

There are also two parks in the city proper.

And…a huge botanic garden just above the city, easily accessed by foot, cable car or bus. People often commute through it to/from work.

AND, right near where I live is a sanctuary for plants, birds and tuatara (a living fossil). Check out a map of Wellington…it is tiny, but still has all this protected forest/bush. LOVE IT. :)

                    • TruuuV

Sounds awesome but knowing people walked to and from work through a botanical garden makes me think I’d have to sit in bushes and scare people every now and again.

                    • Logan

Well, they wouldn’t shoot you, but they might bash you.

                    • TruuuV

It’s fine, I’m long and light. If I’ve got forests to run towards then I’m disappearing before they get a decent grasp on me.

                      =D

                    • Logan

Hope you run fast! Much of this country trains constantly for marathons and triathlons and other hardcore races!

                    • TruuuV

In short bursts I’ve got most people beaten. If they follow me into the forest however, I may need to climb a tree for a breather.

  • aslowdescent

I love Saint Martin! But the French side has better beaches :)

Why I love C. G. P. Grey: before I watched this video, I didn’t even know I was ignorant on the topic. Now, after watching, I know I’m both ignorant and confused. Progress!

    • http://dailyoftheday.com/ Kabwla Two-Lips

Indeed, it’s like the “Where are you?” “On earth” Q&A.
Technically correct, but not very helpful.

  • ilovellamas

I already knew this, but I could never remember if it was the Netherlands or Holland that was a province of the country… this video made it so clear that I’ll never forget again. Really well-made video! But the second half put too much new information into a short time that they should’ve left this video for just the first half and made another video for the rest, like a part 2.

That’s what the director wanted, but the studio did not see room for sequalization/franchizing.

He tried to shoot it anyway, got 7 minutes of footage, the studio got pissed:
“Bring it down to under four minutes or it will never see the day.”
      - “But I can’t !”
“Then we’ll find a director who will”

      -”Oh? Ok.”

So in a delirium of anger and too much coffee, CGP Grey cut most of the dialog and background story. In a final attempt to get his way, or perhaps to piss the studio off, he cut it to 4:00:49 exactly (going over without going over).

It was either that, or giving Alan Smithee the credit.
