Nerds in the Know

 15 Jan 2013   Nerd News

  •  (Above)  You think this is bad?  The other day I was playing Halo 4 and found <Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker> in a drop pod on Complex.  The other team may have been cheating.
  • Joss Weadon’s upcoming S.H.I.E.L.D. TV show– which we should all still be excited about –will be set after The Avengers.  Agent Coulson will still be a character, despite also being dead.  Maybe he’ll haunt the helicarrier and in the strangest crossover ever Nick Fury will call Angel Investigations to come deal with it.
  • If you’re interested in spending a lot of money on something that probably won’t work very hard, you can hire a depressed stripper.  Or you can just buy this sub-standard tablet.  At least you won’t have to roll it up in the carpet if it breaks.
  • This might as well be the basis for all new Sonic games and comics.  There was already one good show, but that was probably the basis for this.  Oh no.  The blog just Inceptioned itself.
  • Batman has the Bat Mobile and the guy who shouts homophobic slurs at you over Xbox Live has to overcome how afraid he is that he’ll be perceived as “gay” when he admits to his friends that he wants this neat Xbox Mobile.  Well, he has to overcome a lot of fears.  He probably also has a very comfortable set up in his closet, so give him a break.
  • You ever get the feeling that you’re occupying a parallel universe and that maybe you missed something very interesting just one Macrocosm away?
  • I wish someone would force me to make a Star Trek movie in 3D.  In fact, I’d surely be forced to do something much worse before they handed me the camera!

Speaking of things I wish I could do, there is the greatest rumor floating around the internet.  What a good idea!  This basically amounts to a big budget Star Wars fan fiction, but what’s wrong with that?  It also makes for an interesting topic of discussion.  If you could write and direct your own movie based on an existing fictional setting (but none of the characters or major plot points), what would it be?  Would you try to expand the existing mythology?  Or would you simply use it as another detail in the story like Zack Snyder seems to want to do?  The possibilities are endless, so do not deny DotD your vision!  Otherwise we may come in the night and take it from you!  Your ideas, I mean.  Not your eyesight.  You need that to read this and type responses!

Regarding Coulson, it’s Marvel, they can just retcon him back to life.

    • Andrew

Perhaps, but remember that Joss Weadon is running this show. So, you’re probably right but at least we’ll get a good story out of it. I hope.

      • MynameisBlarney

Looks like you were thinking about a certain former cast member of Star Trek TNG when typing Joss Whedon. Hehe…
Also, since it is Whedon running the show, it’s likely to be very very good.

        • Andrew

You got me, sir! I’ve been watching a lot of Next Gen lately. When I say “watching,” I do mean watching. Not re-watching. I have a lot of catching up to do in life :D

      • DanielCopeland

True, Whedon running it means that at the very least there will be a decent subplot behind the return, like re-souled Spike and Angel getting their second chances from the PTB.

        • Andrew

Yes! It’s an exciting prospect. It’s nice to be able to have confidence in Superhero based multimedia again!

Regarding Coulson, I’ve half a mind to say they’re only bringing him back because of the sheer number of fangirls who threatened to do something horrible if he weren’t.

      • http://dailyoftheday.com/ Lascivious Lass

        Coulson gets me so hawt!

      • TruuuV

^ Said she only has half a mind hahahahaha.

  • PhiloteSplitter

Doctor Who is such a flexible and wide (or dramatically silly, depending on your point of view) universe that they’ve already basically done that with Torchwood (Harkness is in DW though).
I always loved the huge, fleshed out and consistent fictional worlds, the only thing keeping DW from being the best is its lack of consistency. I have not yet found a world better than that of The Lord of the Rings. I swear, there is a history and reason for everything.

Is there some good and/or necessary reason for the links being blue now? Hard to read.

    • Andrew

Good sir, there is not a necessary reason for anything that happens around here. However, sometimes there’s a good excuse for things to unhappen. In other words, I’ll make sure the links are a little more eye friendly. Thank you for pointing that out!

      • Guest

Much better, thank you so much. http://dailyoftheday.com/category/nerd-news/

        • Andrew

          We aim to please.

  • Nubnut

Oh dear god… Even outside WoW one can’t escape Thunderfury.

    • http://dailyoftheday.com/ Lascivious Lass

Did somebody say Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker?!

  • http://twitter.com/#!/ocathalain Arturia O’Cathalain

The other day I spent 10 minutes ranting to my dad about how much I want to see a Superman/Spiderman crossover movie, and how tragic it is that that is never going to happen. I was… a bit out of it. Do not remember most of the details now. But that doesn’t really fit the question.

  • http://dailyoftheday.com/ Lascivious Lass

Props for the game genie link. I still vividly remember the Christmas morning when Santa brought me one. About a year or two ago, I read about how the product came to be, and was even more excited to own one. <3

    • Andrew

How did it come to be? Was it Hermes? Eris? Loki? Puss in Boots?!?

You better just tell me, otherwise I’m just going to name something from every human mythology.

      • DanielCopeland

        It was obviously Papa Guede.

        • Andrew

That would explain the smell. And where all my cigars went.

      • http://dailyoftheday.com/ Lascivious Lass

Loki seems fitting – a little hacking with a little mischievousness.

        • Andrew

Really? I thought it would of been Eris. That damn apple is like, the best metaphor for a cheat device that no one’s used yet.

  • MynameisBlarney

    Regarding the pic.
This happens in DDO. EVERY. FUCKING. TIME.

    • Andrew

That game just does not sound like it likes it’s online spelunkers very much! You should insist that it treat you better, otherwise it may find its dungeons empty! And nobody likes an empty dungeon.

      • MynameisBlarney

Well, I haven’t played DDO in months, due to “not having a real computer” issues, but I’ve talked with the guild leader a few times, and supposedly the drop rates are better and character/alignment appropriate.

        • TruuuV

          DDO…. Dungeons and Dragons Online?

          • MynameisBlarney

            Yup

        • Andrew

Ah, I forgot about the computer problems you mentioned. Condolences. But it’s good to hear that DDO isn’t abusing it’s player base. Maybe soon it will kick it’s drinking habit too :D

  • MynameisBlarney

Is anyone else having trouble with disqus today?
I can’t access replies to my comments.

    • dailyoftheday

I emailed Disqus about the issue. Hopefully they will resolve it soon.

      Thanks,

      • MynameisBlarney

        No no…thank YOU! :D

        • dailyoftheday

Great…now you gave me an orange [1] that I can’t get rid of. >:(

          -KT

          • MynameisBlarney

            ? an orange?

              A notification, you numpty :P

                • http://dailyoftheday.com/ Madame McThunder

I DON’T GET IT EITHER. My sister’s room mate started calling everyone Numpties and I have no idea what it means BUT IT HAS CAUGHT ON. I AM INFECTED. SAVE YOURSELF.

                  • MynameisBlarney

                    I’ll be fine, don’t worry numpty….GAH!

                      THE END IS UPON US.

          • http://dailyoftheday.com/ Lascivious Lass

Remember when you’re computer was “blooping” at you?

  • Bling-Nye, the Daft Punk guy

A Star Wars version of 7 Samurai? … hmm… That could be cool. Although I think it’d be cooler if they did Lone Wolf and Cub instead.

    • MynameisBlarney

I think Lucas got his inspiration for the Jedi from Kurosawa’s movies, but the overall plot he pretty much ripped off from Tolkien, at least IMHO.
And yes, the Lone Wolf and Cub idea I like.

      • Bling-Nye, the Daft Punk guy

FYI, Lucas was going off of Joseph Campbell’s theory of monomyth, (Hero with a Thousand Faces) for the Star Wars stories. (But the samurai sword/Jedi lightsaber and such definitely came from Kurosawa’s influence.) If you read Campbell, you’ll start to see that there are commonalities among all myths on the planet and stories that simply resonate with most all humans–for example, you could watch Star Wars in another language, or with no hint of what the dialog is and you’ll still be able to simply visually tell who the ‘good guys’ and the ‘bad guys’ are. There are archetypal characters that appear, like the Hero, the Dark Father, the Messenger, the Wise Elder, the Prankster, etc., etc., etc.. Tolken was the first to really create a vivid ‘new’ mythology, so everything that followed appears to be rip offs; but in reality, it’s just that there are some commonalities that unavoidably will be part of any epic tale, regardless of setting. It’s actually pretty interesting stuff, you can check out the wiki articles of monomyth and The Hero with a Thousand Faces for a brief overview. Basically I am compelled to point stuff like that out when people claim something is a rip off of Tolkien, if anything, just as a possible alternative (because who knows, maybe they actually did rip it off, or it’s just similar enough to appear so). Either way.

        • Andrew

Spoken like someone who’s done some research on the subject! :D Have you read Hero with a Thousand Faces? It certainly doesn’t sound like you have to if you haven’t already though!

          • Bling-Nye, the Daft Punk guy

Yeah, I’m a big mythology/religion buff, and Campbell is one of my favorites on the topics. I’ve read it, among his other books too. The Inner Reaches of Outer Space is fantastic and Myths to Live By is also great. The guy was amazing.

I mean, the guy said stuff like this,

“Now, I came to this idea of bliss because in Sanskrit, which is the great spiritual language of the world, there are three terms that represent the brink, the jumping-off place to the ocean of transcendence:Sat-Chit-Ananda. The word “Sat” means being. “Chit” means consciousness. “Ananda” means bliss or rapture. I thought, “I don’t know whether my consciousness is proper consciousness or not; I don’t know whether what I know of my being is my proper being or not; but I do know where my rapture is. So let me hang on to rapture, and that will bring me both my consciousness and my being.” I think it worked.”

You know that question, “If you could have a conversation with anyone in history with no language barriers, who would it be?” …Joseph Cambell would be near the top of my list.

            • Andrew

It would be an exciting conversation! Too exciting, perhaps. You could be there for days comparing Jesus to Hercules to Horus to Superman, ad infinitum. Those would be some fun days!

      • Andrew

Sir, you really believe George Lucas ripped off Tolkien? :/

Let me rephrase that: Sir… You really believe that George Lucas was SMART ENOUGH to rip of Tolkien? If ONLY that were the case! The prequels would be gone and we could have our childhoods back!

But yeah, the old Samari film influences are impossible to miss. Jedi Knights have way more in common with samurai than any of the other things I’ve heard them compared to (medieval knights, psychic space ninjas, etc.)

  • TruuuV

When are we going to stop talking about this actual news and start talking about how we want Timesplitters 4 and Star Wars: Battlefront 3 to be made?

I can only deal with facts for so long damn it.

    • http://dailyoftheday.com/ Lascivious Lass

TIMESPLITTERS!!!!! NAO!!!!!!!! MY BODY IS READY!!!

      • Andrew

But is your mind? Is anyone’s? They may have to take a survey before they start doing this thing.

    • Andrew

Battlefront 3… Don’t just point out holes in my heart like that!

      • TruuuV

I wouldn’t even want either game for online play, I’d love to go offline multiplayer with a game full of AI like the previous games….. Just nom.

        • Andrew

That’s always good, but the challenge of leading a Rebellion full of real people against an Empire full of real people is just too great to pass up. Though, I may be projecting my issues with authority figures a little, in this instance :D

          • TruuuV

Gameplay trailer style players definitely, everyone playing their relative classes correctly and going for the objective.

When you look at it realistically however it’s a game composed of:
            5 average everyday players.
10 guys in their late 30′s screaming about strategy.
35 kids shouting homophobic slurs whilst glitching or hijacking all vehicles and running over teammates.
And one girl doing her best to play the game without someone realising she’s not male because it’ll end in her getting ragged on and sent 50 friend invites.

…. Then me sat waiting to respawn as I’ve pressed crouch instead of melee for the ninth time because once again the developers have made the button set up different. HOW MANY TIMES CAN YOU SWITCH B AND THE RIGHT ANALOGUE STICK YOU ARSEHOLES, HOW MANY TIMES?!

Unfortunately you only find the games that make you go “Fuck yeah, online multiplayer is amazing!” twice a month. As such I would be fine with AI opponents.

            • Andrew

Fucktards can be ignored online at your leisure. On almost every multiplayer game or system like Xbox Live there are plenty of ways to ignore and mute people who don’t deserve the mouths nature gave them. Even though those people are everywhere, you can’t let their douchebagarry dissuade you from having the best time possible.

Don’t forget that less than two decades ago, only “nerds” liked video games. So when the internet was young all of the multiplayer games were populated mostly by well-meaning introverts. You could make a lot of friends just by logging onto Command and Conquer Red Alert 2 and saying something like “Three way Yuri battle; let’s get weird.”

It can still be this way. We just have to move out of our comfort zones a little. These days my friends and I are too busy trying to start the revolution to be actually playing multiplayer games as often as we’d like. However when we do play we do not use party chat. Imposing social order is easy in a group, even if none of you knows what you’re doing.

Just be nice to the people who are nice, and destroy the people who aren’t! It will be easy too, because the only person more afraid than the socially anxious Spartan in 3rd place on Halo is the guy letting homophobic slurs fall out of his stupid face and into his microphone (which is a phallic object that he likes near his mouth, by the way.)

Also remember that the only reason he’s afraid is because he can’t admit that he’s stupid. And the only reason he’s stupid is because he thinks “faggot” is an acceptable answer to the word “hello.” Fewer people have patience for this than you may already realize.

We can get rid of these people. Really. Forever. We can erase them by changing them into us. Again, it’s not as hard as it sounds. Some of the friends I mentioned earlier USED to be that guy! Just be confident and remember who’s right around here: You people!

            • Andrew

That’s one way to look at it. Or you could just start regarding your team mates as secret opponents and make it your mission to cover them/take all their kills and glory. :D Sometimes you gotta make your own fun.

            • Andrew
