MftM: In Memorium

27 Dec 2012   Heartbreaking, List, Music, Music for the Masses

Jocelyn Pelichet put together a little “who died in 2012″ roll call and it’s a fairly impressive feat. You guys should watch it and be all, “Oh yeah, I remember that. That was so sad” or “What? He died? So sad” or “Who the hell is that? Not sad.”

I’ll get my gripes out of the way. First, the wind effect – I don’t like it.

Second, no Levon Helm? Are you kidding me? One of the greatest voices in musical history. The soul of one of rock’s most beloved bands and you’ve got nothing? Listen, it’s cool you got Tony Sly in there. I love Making Friends and More Betterness, but in terms of musical influence are you really going to argue he belongs in there over Helm, a man who sang on some of the greatest songs of all time.

This injustice will not stand. Stay tuned.

I´m with you on the Helm-issue.

Rag Mama Rag is one of my favorite songs evaarrr

I think DJ Earworm should mash up all of the artists that passed.

Also: A midi keyboard? I don’t say this often, but “…really?!”

    • http://dailyoftheday.com/ Kabwla Two-Lips

Midi is totally in line with the ‘dead things’ theme.

  • TheRogerPodacter

was kind of hoping he would have done more for each artist.
i was looking forward to some acoustic guitar dave brubeck…

and what the hell is with the wind? wow. that almost ruined it right from the start…

    • Carson

His acoustic Brubeck was probably my favorite part.

Why do you only post comments in your own threads?
        Are you not entertained?

    MftA

    • http://dailyoftheday.com/ Kabwla Two-Lips

Oy, I have not had the pleasure of an answer yet.

      • Blinghamstar

        Right, sorry.

        So here’s how I see it…

The title “Music for the Masses” was chosen for the music segment somehow. Regardless of how it was chosen, I feel it doesn’t vibe well with what I perceive the DotD to be, that being something unique, witty, clever, fun, etc.. A play on “Music for the Masses” was proposed (by LL I think?), “Music for them Asses” which to me is much more apropos… It was called ‘juvenile’ as I think the only real argument against it (and, I believe with a misunderstanding of its true potential).

But here’s why I am staunchly in favor of changing it to MftA…

“Music for the Masses” is generic and lame, literally. I suppose there’s the “oh it’s sooo ironic” aspect, if you’re calling it “Music for the Masses” but strive to showcase indie/obscure/unique music and artists that aren’t in the main stream. But really, it’s just a really lame name in my opinion.

“Music for them Asses” at least livens it up and works on multiple levels, as in, music for those unappreciative asses, music for your asses to shake to, etc.. You can take it however you like. It’s funny, unique, and better suits the DotD theme, if you will.

tl;dr – MftM is dumb. MftA is exponentially better.

THE REVOLUTION WILL NOT BE TELEVISED!

          1. The name was voted on, so we had no control over what won over. It was the people who spoke.
          2. We want longevity over brevity when it comes to this music section. Yes, MftA might be funny or kitschy right now, but we’re looking at the future of the site in 10 years. Is MftA something that could actually be a credible source for music info? That’s something we have to consider. (Answer: no, I wouldn’t take a site with that moniker seriously).
          3. In the future, we may change it when we get the other sites set up in the future, but for right now, MftM stands as it is. You can keep saying MftA in every music post that we do, but the answer will still be the same until the time comes when we decide to do otherwise. In which, we will offer suggestions that we find viable (as we did before) and allow the people to vote (which we did).

            1. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not some farcical aquatic ceremony. (The voting needed to be left open longer; a couple days isn’t adequate coverage. I didn’t get a chance to vote and I’m sure I’m not the only one that missed the narrow window…)

            2. Music for the Masses is generically lame, always will be, and has that longevity for lameness, that’s true and I can’t argue that. So, “WHY SO SERIOUS??” -The Joker

            3. Sweet.

            4. I really like you guys and the DotD, I enjoy the comments and commenting, and think the site and the people are great… Carson, and MftM, not so much, not just because on first impression he came off as an egotistical asshole… I can be one too sometimes, so it’s always good to give second chances and stuff… but also because I’m not sure yet I want to see so many MftM posts a day, AND I think the name is hella lame. I’m not the only one.)

            Cheers

Accoording to google, it’s 889.000 items lame.
Maybe the wink to ‘Depeche mode’ will make it slightly less so, though I never cared for that band.

              • Blinghamstar

The local college radio station here has a Music for the Masses segment. I thought their choice was lame too.

                • http://dailyoftheday.com/ Kabwla Two-Lips

Let me sift through the 889K entries.
                  Maybe I can find it.

This is all a learning experience for everyone, so we appreciate all the input. Once we all get in our groove with it (CWIDT?), we think it’ll be a segment that everyone can benefit from.

For now, enjoy the beginning part of a rollercoaster ride where everything is all like “clunk clunk clunk clunk” and a little herky-jerky because it’s about to get AWESOME SOON.

              • Blinghamstar

Of that I have no doubt. It’s already pretty rad, and if it gets any better, it’s gonna be a muthaflippin’ PANTS OFF DANCE OFF Y’ALL!!

                • dailyoftheday

                  Well….maybe not THAT awesome. ;)

                    Now you’re just being modest.

                    Make your mind up, woman!

        • http://dailyoftheday.com/ Kabwla Two-Lips

Dude, can’t accuse you of slacking-off!

My investigation into the abbreviation took me to the (immensly wise in earthly things) Urban Dictionary that also yielded ‘Mother Fucking Tight Ass’.
Which, considering your points made, could be a reflection on the writer.

What I am saying is that I am feeling your vibe bro.
Considering the postings and comments made, I am also under the impression that Carson does not integrate well or is able to percieve the silliness that this here community thrives on.

(I do not know why I am mixing up my writing styles)

… can we have Dithyramb back

      • Blinghamstar

I honestly prefer that to what it is now.
