Let’s all take a moment to applaud 4 young girls, all around the ages of 14 to 15, who entered the Maker Faire Africa this year in Lagos with their pee powered generator. Impressively, the generator can provide 6 hours of electricity to every one liter of urine. From the Maker Faire website, this is the process of how the generator works:
- Urine is put into an electrolytic cell, which separates out the hydrogen.
- The hydrogen goes into a water filter for purification, which then gets pushed into the gas cylinder.
- The gas cylinder pushes hydrogen into a cylinder of liquid borax, which is used to remove the moisture from the hydrogen gas.
- This purified hydrogen gas is pushed into the generator.
Despite some of the security valves in the machine, this invention might need some modifications so it doesn’t end up being the Hindenburg of generators. Even though this is a remarkable achievement, let’s not forget that this is the internet, so naturally there has been some skepticism in the comments on the Maker Faire website. What say you? Are we all pissing out what could be a valuable source of electricity every day?
