Errors in Continuity

You know, you would think that studios would have hired some sort of “Continuity Error Expert” for their movies by now. It’s not really that hard. All it generally takes is a screening of a film and even the most unobservant of human beings will notice that the half-full glass of water from the previous shot is now mysteriously completely full.

But, apparently, ain’t nobody got time for that.

        I was severely admonished one time when I pointed out an error during The Two Towers, when Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimley met the Riders of Rohan, Eomir’s sword was falling out of its scabbard. Some people just don’t appreciate a keen eye for detail.

    They do as far as I know! Any sets I’ve been on had either a dedicated staff member for that or the script supervisor took that role. But there’s a hell of a load of stuff to keep track of so I guess it’s not enough. I don’t think continuity is nearly as much of a problem as TV shows giving their actors freaking empty coffee cups. So bloody obvious. :(

    (Also, when I read the title of this post I figured you meant continuity errors in the universe. You know, just in real-life, generally. I was kinda excited!)

      I watched the behind the scenes of a movie once and the director introduced some guy whose whole job was checking continuity. He had to constantly keep resetting an analog clock in the background, measuring the location of things that had been moved in the take (a coat on the back of a chair, the chair itself, a drink, the way the actor’s shirt laid across his chest, the actresses every flippin’ strand of hair)…I would shoot myself if that were my job.
