Cleverly Censored George Orwell Book Covers

Well, this is just bloody brilliant.

Penguin publishing has just re-released five of George Orwell’s classic books, which include 1984, Animal Farm, Down and Out in Paris and London, Homage to Catalonia, and Politics and the English Language.

This clever cover for 1984 was done by typographer and designer David Pearson. It is, quite frankly, perfect.

George Orwell indirectly amuses me, by which I mean that I have to laugh every time someone is making an argument against (the incorrect understanding they have of) socialism and cites him, most especially 1984. 1984 is like Kafka, in that if someone is referencing it, it’s almost always in a completely wrong way.

      I totally disagree with you, as you can read in chapte*^* @&*^* *(&(*&(#(&& (*%*(#( (&#$%(&# (*& (*%&(#&%$(*&# %(_#_& (*&(_*#&@_^_@&#*($& -&*(@#&*()*)*G)(UG_*&#$+_ @ TJP)(UI#FG_K$(U)*(C*<()#*$CT^JP$:CFUI^"ZX_#($:^*#M(_&}CF^(L}(X'/40vm8-359[6x/[39b6] 93;640×3[

That may be true, but has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?

Did I drink too much at lunch?! What the hell does this say?

          • http://dailyoftheday.com/ Kabwla Two-Lips

You’ve got to be kidding me. I’ve been further even more decided to use even go need to do look more as anyone can. Can you really be far even as decided half as much to use go wish for that? My guess is that when one really been far even as decided once to use even go want, it is then that he has really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like. It’s just common sense.

Perhaps people are thrown off by the fact that “Ingsoc” is Newspeak for “English Socialism.” I’m curious (academically) as to what you mean when referring to inaccurate citations of 1984 in arguments against socialism. For example?

…or maybe it’s all just doublethink.

      • DanielCopeland

In that it’s much like German National Socialism, by which I mean that the name represents the original intent but not the eventual philosophical motivations of the party. Much like the Nazi party was socialist in little more than name by WW2, so is The Party by the time of the events of the book.

        • Blinghamstar

Well yeah, Ingsoc is totalitarianism, not socialism. The point was that the socialist movement was corrupted (as were those you mentioned) from within and became something else. As a democratic socialist, Orwell was trying to point out how much care must be taken to avoid such a disaster, as he also wrote in Animal Farm.

So you’re talking about people pointing to 1984 as being what they believe actual socialism to be?

          • DanielCopeland

I guess I should have made that more explicit in my first post. Yes, I find that most arguments referencing 1984 tend to be from right-wingers arguing against liberalism in general, dishonestly equating liberalism with socialism with communism, and that they assert that 1984 is an example of socialism in action, instead of, as you reference, the danger of corruption leading any movement, no matter how well-intentioned, down the path of totalitarianism.

And yes, Animal Farm is another great example. I was one of the few in my high school class to understand the significance of the ending scene, that the pigs (Stalinists) wound up nearly indistinguishable from those they’d replaced. Then again, most of my class had to have the allegory pointed out to them, despite that we’d already covered the Bolsheviks in World History earlier that month, so I can’t be too proud of that insight.

Considering that Orwell’s own views hewed towards democratic socialism, it’s somewhat ironic that a majority of those citing him in support of their own arguments do so in an attempt to argue against socialism in general, and inevitably have no actual understanding of the concept.

            • Blinghamstar

Indeed. I was just wondering, because the times 1984 has ever come up in discussions I’ve had, it’s been referenced accurately; simply because everyone involved had actually read the book at least once, if not more. But you’re certainly right about the ignorant citations out there from the politically vociferous (say it louder, it gets more true with volume, right?). I’m pretty sure they’ve never actually read it, which is a shame.

Thanks for indulging my curiosity. :)

Thank you both, this was a wonderful read.

I have a coworker who is the embodiment of “louder = more correct”. He tried to insist that our boss’ second job, DJing, isn’t a real job because it’s fun, and every argument against his claim was met with increasing volume.
