We here at Daily of the Day have always known that sloths are truly the heroes of the animal world. I mean, look at that face! Not only do they teach us that just hanging around all day is totally fine, but they also teach us that you should have a smile on your face while you do it.
But it turns out that sloths also have given another gift to humankind (besides making us feel better about ourselves when we’re lazy). Scientists have discovered that sloth fur, or the chemicals that microbes excrete on sloth fur, can actively fight pathogens and even breast cancer cells.
From Popular Science:
The chemicals excreted by microbes in sloth fur had potent activity against a host of human pathogens, and even breast cancer cells, and possess anti-malaria and antibacterial properties. The studyfound that chemicals isolated from fungi in three-toed sloths were deadly for parasites that cause malaria and Chagas disease (Plasmodium falciparum and Trypanosoma cruzi, respectively). The research was only a partial cataloguing of microbes that live in sloth fur, which the scientists describe as a potential goldmine for drug discovery.
This is an especially good thing for those who suffer from Chagas disease, as many of the man-made medications often produce negative side effects.
So, thank you again, sloths, for being the amazing creatures that you are. Catch you on the flip side.
When you combine two of Daily of the Day’s favorite things – sloth and space – and then put them together, chances are that it’s going to get posted no matter how terrible it is.
Luckily, this new little animation from Weebl is pretty damn good, so I will joyously share this with the world as I now attempt to set “Sloths in Space” as my new ringtone.
Hello All! You may or may not recognize me as Disqus commenter on DotD, formally on TDW, as RedUni. I’ve decided to use my extensive background in Journalism and overall Nerd-know-how to hopefully co-contribute dope content on NitK.
My mission at Nitk: With so much controversy lately surrounding who or what constitutes a “Nerd” or “Geek”, I’d prefer we stay civil in this corner of the Internet and just enjoy the content and each other’s comments. This should be a safe place we can gather to learn about and celebrate things others might not find interesting.
Things you should know about me: I LOVE Sushi. I live in Los Angeles, California. I sometimes like using CAPS LOCK for emotional effect. I would consider myself a TV geek and film buff foremost.
Knowledge I’m pretty confident in: The late 80’s/ early 90’s was the pinnacle era for Television theme songs. Second, This was the first time Christopher Guest and Michael McKean appear on-camera together.
Most embarrassing thing I’m willing to admit: I am currently obsessed with the British reality show TOWIE or “The only way is Essex” which if you’re interested in watching in the states it’s available on HULUPLUS, but only up to season six and without the “Marbs” Specials (you’ll understand when you start watching) OR, you can see ALL the episodes from seasons FOUR-NINE online here.
So, Prepare Yourself. I like what I like and I don’t apologize for it. I hope we all get along.

If you think it’s easy being a baby sloth, think again. Their exercise regimens are hard. I mean, how else do you think they get that rotund body shape and that slow-moving saunter? By being lazy?
Okay, well, maybe.
This sloth apparently has too much hair for it to find its carrots. Maybe that sloth shouldn’t use its plate like a pillow. Then it could get to its carrots easier.
Or, you know, continue to have its human slave hand them over. That makes much more sense.
