Radi-Aid is a fundraising and awareness initiative from the group, Africa for Norway. The organization is working to send radiators, blankets, and smiles to Norway to help alleviate the icy cold situation plaguing the country.
Well…okay, so not really. But, Radi-Aid, which is actually a Norwegian based group, is working to raise awareness for something far better than what the video is suggesting.
Imagine if every person in Africa saw the “Africa for Norway” video and this was the only information they ever got about Norway. What would they think about Norway?
We’ve all seen commercials of that ilk, which encourage ones to send money to various charity organizations to help under-developed countries, and while Radi-Aid admits that it helps for the short term, commercials like this may be unknowingly perpetuating negative stereotypes. So, what exactly is Radi-Aid looking to accomplish? They want to create and promote a new set of guidelines for organizations raising awareness for various causes. For instance:
Fundraising should not be based on exploiting stereotypes.
Most of us just get tired if all we see is sad pictures of what is happening in the world, instead of real changes.
